Hello. Hopkins/Stanford mixup?

I see you've labeled the mountain in File:Pioneer Basin sunset.jpg as Stanford and the mountain in File:Mount_Hopkins.jpg as Hopkins, despite the original photographers having labeled them as the reverse (Hopkins and Stanford, respectively).

Hopkins lies to the west of Pioneer Basin (see, e.g., [1]), and so it makes sense the the mountain in File:Pioneer Basin sunset.jpg is actually Hopkins (since Hopkins is to the west of Pioneer Basin and Stanford is to the north). This would make the original photographer correct.

Perhaps you are misremembering which mountain is which? Overriding two separate photographers' identification of mountains may require more sourcing than your own memory. — hike395 (talk) 05:58, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

My memory has nothing to do with this as I have never been there. The original photographer has the memory issue. I identified it using Google Earth 3D. The peaks can look similar, however the pattern of trees on the ridge near the saddle to left confirms the identity as Stanford. Also, "if" it were Hopkins, there would be mountains to the left in the distance, instead of the ridge we see. If you have never used Google Earth 3D, please start now. Then clean up your good-faith but mistaken changes. Also please restore the correct photo to Mount Hopkins page. Thanks. ̴ Ron Clausen (talk) 06:18, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Later --- I think it's clear that File:Mount Stanford, Pioneer Basin Lakes.jpg from Tom Hilton and File:Pioneer Basin sunset.jpg by Fred Hsu are the same mountain taken at different times of the day, so there's disagreement about the identification. Given that the sun is setting behind the mountain in the Hsu photograph, I think it's likely to be Hopkins.

I can Google Earth 3D to check. I'm not convinced yet. — hike395 (talk) 06:22, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) I'm poking around the Basin trying to figure out the viewpoint -- there are many possible lakes, and so far I'm not getting a great match for either Hopkins or Stanford for the Hilton/Hsu combination.. Could you post the URLs to Google 3D Earth that you used to determine the difference? That would be helpful. — hike395 (talk) 06:44, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.
