Welches Land?

C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 22:29, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Rejected submission

I have two certificates to support information on Pilot Peter Lee Foster. May I submit those as proof? Stephen Vest (talk) 18:11, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

As long as the certificates are in the Public Domain or you have the permission by the author of the certificates, yes. If you have the permission of the author of the certificates, you may sent this to the VRT team.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 19:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
They were provided to me by Mr. Foster. They don't need to appear, but they document the records. Stephen Vest (talk) 19:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
If you are just talking about citing them in a Wikipedia article, there is no need that they be online, just correctly cited. And, actually unlike what Paradise Chronicle said, you should not forward VRT a permission someone sent to you (if you are going that route at all). The copyright-holder needs to be in direct contact with VRT, though its fine if you are cc'd; you can even start the correspondence, cc'ing both, but the copyright-holder would need to respond on that thread and explicitly agree to grant the relevant permission. - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, Jmabel.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 21:01, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Stephen Vest, are you attempting to create an article about a person on the English Wikipedia? Do you wish to submit certificates as "proof" of information in that biography? At Wikimedia Commons, we are not concerned about what facts may be supported by the content of those certificates. Commons is only concerned about whether you have ownership, license, or permission to upload the files that you wish to upload. Elizium23 (talk) 20:44, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

how to upload my own photo?

I´m trying to create a page for me with proessional purposes. @ Brunogp89 (talk) 22:13, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

@Brunogp89: assuming you mean a page on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), please don't do that. Writing about yourself for professional purposes on en-wiki is one of the quickest ways to have your account blocked there. See their guidance on conflicts of interest.
Similarly, normally there are only two reasons why a picture of yourself would belong on Commons. (1) If you are participating in a significant way in one or more WMF projects, you are welcome to upload a small number of personal photos to use on your user pages on the projects (e.g. at User:Brunogp89 and its equivalent on other projects). (2) If you are notable for some reason such that a photo of you would be in scope, then it is OK that you are the uploader. E.g. if there is a Wikipedia article about you, or you are a major league athlete, or an elected official, or an author of books published by a reasonably established press, or are a professor at a university, etc., then your photo would be welcome. Unlike en-wiki, we don't have a rule against adding it yourself.
However, even in that last case, to be hosted on Commons, the photo needs either to be in the public domain or to have a free license issued by the holder of the copyright. There are very few ways that a photo of a living person ends up in the public domain, especially anything taken after the late 1980s, so it is nearly always a matter of a license. Only the copyright-holder can grant a license and that usually means the photographer, not the subject of the photo (selfies are OK in this respect, since you are your own photographer). If you want to upload a photo taken by someone else, and that is not already published with a free license that you can reference as a source, you almost certainly need to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT, either to have the photographer indicate that they are offering a license, or for you to prove that the copyright was transferred from the photographer to you. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Blaisantkerk - new page

I tried for the first time to create a new page 'Blaisantkerk'. I am the president of the non profit organisation DOIC vzw, who is the owner of the multifunctional building 'Blaisantkerk'. I prepared a text in word that i copied. The text was posted yesterday - but now removed. The explanation that i got from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is bedoeld als een vrij beschikbare, vrij bewerkbare en neutrale encyclopedie voor iedereen. Hoewel iedereen van harte is uitgenodigd om Wikipedia te bewerken, vond een medewerker aan de encyclopedie een of meer van uw bewerkingen niet constructief. Deze bewerking(en) is/zijn daarom teruggedraaid of verwijderd.

In short: my input was not 'constructive'. What does that mean? The text was just the history of the building and the new facility. Who could help me? What do I need to change?

Thanks in advance.

So this is Wikimedia Commons: it is a sister project to Wikipedia that is about storing media (audio, images, video, etc.). If you have an issue on Wikipedia, you'll have to discuss it with editors there. Everyone who has an account at Wikipedia has an account at Commons, but they are just separate projects. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:12, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Alboort michel: If you were writing in Dutch, then perhaps start by looking at this Dutch webpage. Most wikipedia language sites have their own requirements but for instance the English wikipedia has a Draft section where people can write articles which will then be reviewed for notablity and complying with the standards for an acceptable article. Wikipedia is not a promotional site and it is highly discouraged to write about subjects you have any type involvement with due to a conflict of interest. Ww2censor (talk) 11:33, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Alboort michel: Hi, and welcome. In addition to the above, nl:Blaisantkerk has twice been deleted for infringement of copyright of the website blaisantkerk.be - please post permission there or have it sent from that site via VRT or VRT/nl.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:48, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Alboort michel: Clarifying where Jeff wrote "please post permission there," he means that http://blaisantkerk.be/ could indicate a CC-BY-SA 4.0 (or more generous) license for all or part of its content; then there would be no copyright problem using that content on Wikipedia. However, there still might be an issue of conflict of interest. You should almost certainly read nl:Wikipedia:Zelfpromotie. - Jmabel ! talk 20:22, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Is that not sufficiently covered by "If it's your own website, please follow Creative Commons' instructions to adopt the free culture license of your choice" under "The image was first published on my website, or on my own space of a shared website." at VRT#When contacting VRT is unnecessary?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: "there" was ambiguous, could either have meant [:nl:Blaisantkerk]] or http://blaisantkerk.be/. - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Privately commissioned drawing

Hi. Prior to the Cuban Communist revolution, a neighborhood association in Cuba commissioned a drawing from a well known Cuban Cartoonist to commemorate a resident's contributions to the Boy Scouts of Cuba. This "cartoon" is on the cover of the Association's monthly bulletin. I have checked to U.S. Copyright office for the artist's works, and the above privately commissioned work does not appear. When the Communist government assumed power in Cuba, it eliminated individual property rights, so everything would be public domain in that country. The cartoonist passed away in 1965. Can I assume that this work is in the public domain and upload it to the Wikipedia page of the person in whose honor it was created? The individual is no longer alive. Flightbook (talk) 23:34, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Cuba does have copyright and is a part of the Berne Convention; see {{PD-Cuba}}. It's free in Cuba, as life+50 means it left copyright in 2016. However, it's copyrighted in the US for 95 years from when it was published, or put up on the wall.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:41, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for your guidance. The cartoonist copyrighted some works that I was able to find in the U.S. Copyright website for works he did for some magazines, but this private caricature was not included. How can I upload this to Wiki if the author is no longer living, It is no longer copyright in Cuba, and the Association that paid for the work was dissolved 50+ years ago? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you. Flightbook (talk) 00:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
@Flightbook: Prosfilaes didn't spell out the reasoning, but he is correct that it is copyrighted in the U.S. for 95 years from when it was first published. That is because it was still copyrighted in Cuba in 1996, and the URAA copyright restoration therefore treats it as if it had been registered for copyright in the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 01:34, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, Jmabel. Let me ask a few additional questions since you've been kind enough to educate me... 1) How does one know that the sketch was copyrighted in Cuba? Is a filing with the government required for a copyright? There is no copyright marking on the document... 2) If the sketch was paid for (or commissioned) by an entity, doesn't the entity own the rights to it? 3) If the answers to the former are that the document is still copyrighted in the U.S. regardless, can a living heir of the cartoonist grant permission for its use? (assuming that person can be found...) Thanks for the education! Flightbook (talk) 02:09, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
1) Cuba (unlike the U.S.) was already under the Berne Convention, so copyright was automatic upon creation. 2) No, paying someone to do artwork does not normally transfer copyright. It's pretty unlikely anyone would have given it a moment's thought, so copyright would almost certainly have remained with the artist. 3) Yes, if someone is clearly the heir to the artist's intellectual property rights, they could grant a license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:17, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I will see if it is possible to track down a heir based on the information present in the US Patent Office database. I believe there may be periodic fees that have to be paid, so presumably someone is paying those. And the someone may be the heirs.... Flightbook (talk) 17:02, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

I work for a college and would like to update our wikipedia page which has an outdated logo. I attempted to upload our current logo but was denied by Wikipedia. I believe the update was denied because Wikipedia detected it was a copyrighted image. What is the proper procedure for updating the college logo, which is copyrighted? GFC Otter (talk) 23:49, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

@GFC Otter: It wouldn't exactly be "because it was a copyrighted image" but it would likely be because you tried a cross-wiki upload of a small file, and when relatively new users try to do that it is usually a copyright violation, so we set up a filter so they will come ask, like you just did. You don't say what college and you don't link to the new logo, but unless it is so simple as not to be eligible for copyright, anything "new" is almost certainly copyrighted and should not be on Commons unless the copyright-holder (which could be the designer or the college, depending on the agreement between the two) provides a free license, which typically won't happen in cases like this.
Instead, and assuming we are talking about the English-language Wikipedia (you didn't say, but I'm guessing) you should use their approach for handling non-free content, which is entirely internal to the English-language Wikipedia and does not involve Commons. See en:Politehnica University of Bucharest and en:File:Universitatea Politehnica Bucuresti logo.png for a good example of doing this correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
@GFC Otter: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logo as a new user, and another filter.. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via VRT. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:37, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Copyright unknown

I want to upload the three images of Koji Kobayashi from the following sites:

I have tried reverse image search but cannot find the origins. How can I determine if they are free to use? BinaryBrainBug (talk) 12:31, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

@BinaryBrainBug: more-or-less contemporary photos are almost never free enough for Commons, unless someone has specifically issued a free license, which does not appear to be the case here. But other than that: since the U.S. dropped its requirement for a copyright notice in 1989, there is no significant country in the world where photographs aren't generally copyrighted at creation. There are a handful of exceptions. Some governments, notably the U.S. federal government and a few U.S. states, place work by their employees (but usually not their contractors) immediately immediately in the public domain. Some other governments waive copyright for national symbols, protecting them by non-copyright means. No reason to think something like that would apply here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Country contacts on Commons for questions about files for a specific country

I sometimes have questions about where a specific location is within a country or the name of a government official in a photo.

Is there a list of helpful volunteers, by country, that will help answer country specific questions about Commons files?

If there is no list, where would be the best placed to go for country specific questions about Commons files? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 18:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

I would initially go to the help desk or village pump of the country in question and use Google Translate. Wouter (talk) 19:46, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@Ooligan: A good place is probably the talk page of that country's specific project on the Wikipedia in a language of that country. Or, if you don't speak that language, then the talk page of that country's specific project on the Wikipedia of a language you speak. For examples, see en:Category:WikiProject Countries projects. If there is not an active project for that country, you can try at places like en:Wikipedia:Reference desk. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:47, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Why am I not able to upload an historic portrait (photo from 1926) of my great grandfather?

My great grandfather was a leading doctor of an historic clinic in the center of germany. Why am I not allowed to upload his portrait from 1926? He already died 1940. Isn't his portrait of public interest in that article? Böhmler Nachlass (talk) 20:49, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

@Böhmler Nachlass: Quite likely you are able to upload it. You don't say who or what prevented you, which makes this a bit difficult to address. If it was an attempt at a cross-wiki upload there are a lot of filters on that; please use Special:UploadWizard here on Commons.
The only likely issue would be: who took the photo? If it was someone who was still alive in 1954, and you are not heir to their intellectual property, then their heirs—not the heirs of the subject of the photo—would own the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 22:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel OK, thanks, I think it was a cross-wiki upload. I'll try again. The photographer is unkown as far as I know. Böhmler Nachlass (talk) 00:16, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
@Böhmler Nachlass: if the author is genuinely unknown, and the work was never published, then {{PD-anon-70-EU}} should cover the German side, so you can definitely upload this locally to the German language Wikipedia. However, Commons needs the picture to be also valid under U.S. copyright, and if you don't know the author and it was never published, it has 120 years of U.S. protection, so it can't be published in Commons until 2047. If you could establish who took the photo, then Commons could accept it 70 years after their death. If you could establish that you are the heir to the intellectual property of the person who photographed it, then you would be able to offer a license to cover the U.S. side, and could upload it to Commons at any time. - Jmabel ! talk 00:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
@Böhmler Nachlass: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English or German Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or de:Bilder, deren Urheber nicht bekannt ist because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:55, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Font issues

Uploading O su (Osu! logo).svg, I have run into issues with displaying the font correctly, it should be in Fairfax Pona HD, displaying sitelen pona text as shown here. JnpoJuwan (talk) 14:19, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

On the page you link to is a copyright notice. So this font is not free and cannot be used in a svg on commons. Also: only webfonts can be used that are available on WMF sites. Even if this font was free, it is unlikely to be included. You can however use one of the webfonts from commons, or you can use a svg editor to transform the text into vector graphics - provided that is not in conflict with the copyright of the font desginer. Error when uploading from Flickr

While trying to import this image from Flickr, which is under CC-BY 2.0, the upload wizard gave me an error of "Unfortunately, no images from this Flickr account can be uploaded on this site". Why does this happen? What's specifically different about this Flickr account? Suntooooth (talk) 03:10, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

@Suntooooth: Looks like it has the work of a lot of photographers on a single account for a theater company, so the licenses are probably not worth much. It doesn't seem likely, and is certainly not obvious, that they cleared rights appropriately, or that any licenses there were granted by the actual copyright-holders. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Fair enough, I guess - thanks for the answer :] Suntooooth (talk) 05:03, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
@Suntooooth: You can see also Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with insource:huntingtontheatreco for details. The photo that interests you has a copyright notice to the photographer. You can always contact the photographer with the form on his website and check with him if the photo is really offered under the CC license as indicated by the Huntington Theatre. The photo has been there with that license for more than 11 years. Maybe the photographer was never aware of that use of his photo or maybe he agreed to offer the license. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:28, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

@Kmnahidulislambd: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able filter 153. Also, Special:AbuseFilter/186 and another filter worked as intended. We do not host encyclopedia articles, résumés, CVs, current ads, random advice, spam, etc. here on Wikimedia Commons per COM:NOT.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:20, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Two questions

1. I made a straightened version of the poorly-named File:Museums Victoria Collections.jpg (an Australian broadcast radio listener's licence from 1952) but received the (automated) refusal on the grounds I did not have permission to overwrite the file. I was under the impression that the modified file became the new "go to" version but that the previous version/s remained available if the need for reversion arose.

2. I am going through a box of photographs I inherited from my father-in-law. Some may be useful to illustrate a Wikipedia article, such as File:Hansen residence.jpg I recently uploaded. That one was easy as it was taken before 1955, so copyright-free under Australian law, but others may be younger. How do I release such images? None would have been published elsewhere. Doug butler (talk) 22:25, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

@Doug butler: Hi. Re question 1, I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/290. The proposal to "Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights" was accepted with many supports and one weak oppose 15:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC). After an implementation problem in phab:T345896 and testing, Special:AbuseFilter/290 went live with the Disallow action 09:35, 28 October 2023 (UTC). Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting. You may request COM:AP at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite. You may also request an exception for a particular file at COM:OWR.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:59, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
@Doug butler: Shortening that to what's really relevant here: normally, you'd request an exception for a particular file at COM:OWR, but since we're already discussing here: I take it that you'd like to overwrite this file. If you confirm that here, I'll set it up to allow you. Just come back here when you are done so I can turn that back off.
On your second question: was your father-in-law the photographer for all of these? Are either you or your wife the heirs to his intellectual property? If so, this will be pretty simple.
BTW, in the future, if you have two unrelated questions, it's usually easier to ask them in two separate sections so the threads stay a bit cleaner. - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks, that is what I was looking to do. I suppose I should ask for autopatrol rights, though I'm a long way from being totally competent.
As for my father-in-law's photos, I have uploaded only one. He was not a professional artist or photographer, just an enthusiastic amateur, so intellectual property was the least of his concerns. I just ended up with a box of negatives when his wife was clearing the house.
Yes, I apologise for inconvenience caused. Doug butler (talk) 01:26, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
@Doug butler: if your wife was the heir to the balance residue of his estate, and there was no specific provision about intellectual property rights, then she inherited those. Again, if that's the case, that makes this much simpler; let me know so I can give you the next step. - Jmabel ! talk 01:37, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
I've marked File:Museums Victoria Collections.jpg to allow overwriting. Let me know when you are done; I don't think you can remove that template yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 01:39, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Done, thank you. As for the stash of photos, when Max (my F.I.L.) died, Joan (my M.I.L) cleared the house and moved to a more convenient place, and their four daughters took whatever mementoes they fancied, and much went to the garbage tip, from which I "inherited" the box of negatives by default. I can't say I was his favorite S.I.L. (I wasn't), but clearly the only one with a sense of history. So, in short, his wife inherited his property rights and she passed them to me. Doug butler (talk) 02:13, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
@Doug butler: On the image: I don't think that is necessarily an improvement. It is less sharp. I'm going to revert that and see if I can do that better myself.
No, the image is just too low-res to rotate without a significant loss of sharpness. Maybe there's some AI-based way to do it, but not anything I use. I think that if you want a "straightened" version of that, you should upload under a different file name, because there is going to be a tradeoff, and you should only overwrite for uncontroversial improvements. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
On the photos: In the absence of a will, this is a little messy. I honestly don't know whether this would be considered a solid basis for her to claim to be heir to the relevant copyrights or not. I presume this is Australia we are talking about. Sadly, that 50-year thing is not so simple for Commons, because anything that was still copyrighted in 1996 had its U.S. copyright extended at that time to 95 years from creation, and Commons follows U.S. copyright because that is legally where we publish, plus we voluntarily follow the laws of the country of origin. So we really need a free license for these.
With the proviso that they may say that they actually need to hear from all the heirs, not just one: the most straightforward thing to do would be for your wife to send an email to the address given at COM:VRT, agreeing to license her father's photos under a specific free license (I suggest {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}) and authorizing you to upload on her behalf, specifying this account name as who will be uploading. Then, when you upload, you would attribute her father as author, and indicate the license as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 03:01, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
Another possibility might be to obtain from Joan a writing confirming that she inherited from Max and that she transferred to you the negatives and their copyrights. Then you send a copy of that writing to VRT. Of course, that works if Joan is living and has not changed her mind about it. If Joan is not living, the fact that her gift to you was not confirmed in writing might be a problem about the copyrights. In that case, if your wife inherited from Joan, then the solution above by Jmabel can work. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:13, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. You wrote on Wikimedia Commons, a companion site whigh provides free images and other media to Wikipedia and other projects. Sadly, I have yet to find a fully-functional dark mode solution for editing here. What mobile browser and OS do you use for editing in light mode? I usually use Chrome on Windows, and I found this extension lacking (it changed every tab in every window at once, negatively impacting performance). I may go back to it if I have another computer death, new computer, or "browser forgot everything" incident. For just browsing in Chrome on Android, I have gone into Settings / Theme and selected the "Dark" radio button, but that doesn't do anything for me. Samsung Internet Browser actually respects my Android's Settings / Display / "Dark" radio button. Document with multiple pages

I want to upload a three-page document (or part of document collection). The source is JPEG images.

What should I do?

  1. upload 3 different images (how to link them together?)
  2. compile them in one PDF (it will have nice paging on Commons page)
  3. use some template (that I couldn't find) for multiple files paging
  4. create a gallery or category

Nyuhn (talk) 06:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

#1, #2, & #4 are all fine. If you do #1, there isn't exactly a template for this, but there are several acceptable ways to do it. See File:Parkour 01-1.jpg for a good example. - Jmabel ! talk 20:07, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
PDF is probably best if they are mainly a text, series of JPEGs tied together one way or another if they are mainly visual. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
I eventually discovered a template {{BookNaviBar}} and an example of using it for a book - {{De Kafka Hungerkünstler}}. It might be outdated.
The reason I ask is that I've seen many text documents uploaded as JPEG series on Commons.
In my case, I followed the example of Parkour 01-1.jpg. Nyuhn (talk) 08:09, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

@Amir Ghandi:
  1. You should not be uploading that as an overwrite. You should upload it to a distinct file name and link the two files with {{Other version}}.
  2. There are very few domains from which the Upload Wizard and other tools can upload directly. Typically, you have to download a file to your own system, then upload it to Commons.

Copyrighted picture?

There is a picture of Bob Crosby with his family, two online newspapers have put it in their documents. They did not provide credit because it seems that the author is unknown. The picture is somewhere between 1938 and 1950. It was not originally put in any book or newspaper; it seems like it has come from a family photobook. Is it copyrighted? Can I put it in the wiki? [1]https://greatentertainersarchives.blogspot.com/2016/03/story-behind-photo-bob-crosby.html AlekosK04 (talk) 17:51, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

@AlekosK04: see COM:HIRTLE. An anonymous photo of that age that was unpublished as of 1989 will be protected for 120 years from creation, in this case until 2059–2071. Had it been published with a copyright notice within 25 years of creation, the term would have been 95 years from that publication. To be PD now, it would need to have been published before 1989 and without a notice or registration.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:44, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
If it was published in 1963 or earlier, it is in the public domain unless it had a notice and copyright was renewed.
Also, this looks like a publicity photo, not a photo from a family scrapbook. If distributed to the press without a notice (or with a notice but without renewal in 1963 or earlier), it's PD as well. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 22:02, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm making some changes to the article on 'Richard Alsager', and I've came across a drawn portrait of him on an auction site.

To my knowledge, it's legal to use an art work 70 years after the artist's death. According to this site, the image approximately comes from the year 1835.

I'm curious as to whether this still can be used due to the picture of the portrait being recent.

Copyrights question for photographs I took of paintings, sculptures, etc

Can I upload photographs I took myself of

-paintings (in a museum)

-sculptures, statues, buildings, artwork (for example an old church, old sculptures)

I am assuming if the photographed object was created prior to ca. 1920, it should be okay? Is this assumption correct?

Or if the object is located in a non-US country, is the rule older than ca. 1920 not applicable? Riantennis (talk) 23:09, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

It is more complicated than just this, but the short answer is that yes, you can upload photos you took of objects created before 1920 in 99% of cases. D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 00:18, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
I mostly agree with Benjamin, with the caveat that if the artist died less than 70 years ago, that's a problem in many countries. Many people creating works in 1920 were still alive in 1954. Also, in the U.S., the key date at the moment is January 1, 1929. Anything published before that should be fine. Unpublished work is trickier, and might carry you clear back to 1904 as an issue. 19th century is usually very safe. And this is still keeping it at "rule of thumb" level. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281 by trying to upload one or more pdf files as a new user. Such uploads of pdf files are not allowed at all. The following applies for each file: Usually when someone uploads a pdf file as a new user, it's a copyright violation taken from the web or out of scope. What is in the file? If you were not the original file designer or photographer, that person or those people may need to license it on their official website or social media, or send the file and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the file may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F (but not to Spanish Wikipedia per es:Wikipedia:Uso legítimo) because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:37, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Jeff, is there somewhere in there he would have had any notice referring to "información dañina"? - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: That filter disallows edits with our standard Mediawiki:abusefilter-disallowed message. Mediawiki standard MediaWiki:Abusefilter-disallowed/es starts "Esta acción ha sido identificada automáticamente como dañina", which Google Translated is "This action has been automatically identified as harmful". That seems harsher than the English version's "potentially unconstructive" from special:diff/27494848. We don't have a local version of MediaWiki:Abusefilter-disallowed/es, perhaps you'd like to write one.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:03, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, that is awfully harsh. Rather than try to deal just with our local version, I'll see what I can do about the global one. - Jmabel ! talk 23:30, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
I took the liberty of simply editing it on meta. Since I'm one of the people who routinely does English-Spanish translations for interfaces (usually through translatewiki), this should probably be OK. We'll see if it sticks. - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I probably should know this, and I think at one time I did, but I can't recall: where exactly are you finding the logs about cross-wiki uploads? - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The last 500 logged by the abuse filter for hitting the conditions of Special:AbuseFilter/153 are in this log. Any individual's filter 153 hits can be found by clicking "filter log" on their contributions page. Any file description page's filter 153 hits can be found by clicking "view abuse log" on the history page (even if you have to construct one with action=history from a nonexistent filename). You may also click "Search the abuse log" on Special:AbuseLog. The defining feature is '"Cross-wiki upload from" in summary | "Uploaded while editing" in summary' per line 2 of the conditions for that filter. I generally find the hits from "filter log" and "abuse log" links in reports containing uses of {{User8}} and {{Pagemulti}} (and older uses of {{Page}}, which Krinkle and I specially crafted for that purpose) on COM:FILTERT. I also check the logs of puzzling users who post to this Help desk, the Village pump, noticeboards, etc.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:26, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

How to do a mass DR

How do you do a mass DR? I have had to nominate quite a few images for deletion today because we had put them on Flickr Commons but have found a large number were not in public domain and have had to remove them from Flickr Commons and are trying to also now remove them from Wikimedia. These were images with unknown photographers, but they did not pre-date 1949. Thank you. Marygk86 (talk) 23:39, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

At this point I believe I've worked through the immediate issue with Marygk86 on her user talk page; for the future: Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request should be pretty self-explanatory, but if it is not, then feel free to ask further questions. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Want to add an image to an article, is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, how to proceed?

Hello,

I would like to add an image to the Insignia (Xbox) article. Image here: [4]

According to the https://insignia.live/connect page it says "All screenshots and text (including the alt-text, and FAQ section) in this guide are licenced under CC BY-SA 4.0. Please give credit to "Insignia Team", and optionally link to this page." The above image is the last one on the page.

It has been a long time since I added any images to an article, especially one here at Commons. Can you please give me some guidance on how to go through the Upload Wizard with the license mentioned? I don't see the license as a choice (or I'm not looking hard enough.)

Thanks,

Urbanracer34 (talk) 18:09, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Please note that part of this post was originally from English Wikipedia's Help Desk, where I asked it first. Urbanracer34 (talk) 18:57, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
  • @Urbanracer34: CC BY-SA 4.0 is actually our most common license on Commons, but I'm not familiar enough with the decision tree of the Upload Wizard to tell you exactly how best to go through it. I would suggest that you just do your best, then expect to edit anything that doesn't immediately come out right. You will definitely want to indicate https://insignia.live/connect as the source. The page is undated, so all you really can say about the date is the date you retrieved it (and you should probably make a remark to that effect). Feel free to circle back here once you've taken a shot at it, and I (or someone else) can review & fix anything you got wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel Thanks for the advice. I think I did it right. Can you please double check? File:InsigniaMOTDPage.png Thanks! Urbanracer34 (talk) 21:43, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
@Urbanracer34: I added a bit more on date & permission; you should probably have a look to see what I did for future reference.
Also, it looks like someone has nominated this claiming it is a copyvio (of Microsoft's copyright, by Insignia). You will almost certainly want to participate in the relevant discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

I have uploaded pictures of my film. how can they be available to anyone accessing my page?

ilm. Susheel Bajomal Gajwani Filmmaker (talk) 15:11, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Like I said on your talk page, for commercial works like films and posters, a confirmation of the license is needed via COM:VRT. Be aware that the permission should allow any use for anyone for any purpose, including commercial one, i.e. anyone could sell your film without asking or paying you. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:13, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
@Yann: nothing here grants rights to the film itself, just these stills. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Susheel Bajomal Gajwani Filmmaker: you definitely need to do one of two things if you don't want these deleted. Either you can go through the COM:VRT process, as Yann suggests, or you can place these images on a website that is clearly officially connected with the film and indicate the CC-BY 4.0 license there, then edit the respective file mates on Commons to reference that as "source". I know this is inconvenient, but otherwise, you could be any person in the world claiming to be the filmmaker. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Categories and diffusing

I'm not 100% sure if commons categories work differently than on Wikipedia, so sorry if I'm working off a wrong assumption, but "Category:Mug shots of people of the United States" is marked as needing to be diffused, however, several of the subcategories such as Category:Mug shots by California‎ and Category:Mug shots by New York‎, seem to me to not have 100% overlap? A mugshot can be taken by a state but not be of a citizen from it, so it would fit under one but not the other. Maybe I am overthinking this. What is the best way to diffuse this? PARAKANYAA (talk) 07:16, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@PARAKANYAA: I think that the mug shots by state categories should not be under mug shots of people of the United States, because a state could take a mug shot of someone who's a citizen of another country. I have recategorized it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:48, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Auntof6 What's the best way to diffuse this then? By decade? PARAKANYAA (talk) 07:49, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Good question. You could diffuse by:
  • Decade, if you can identify the decade, but the decade probably isn't indicated for a lot of them (the date indicated in a lot of files is the date of upload, not the date the photo was taken)
  • Gender, but the vast majority seem to be for men, so you wouldn't get much reduction
  • Name, in the few cases where there are multiple mug shots of the same person
Maybe black-and-white mug shots would help, but you'd probably end up with a category that still had a lot in it.
That's all I can think of for now. Maybe someone else will have some ideas. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:11, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you :) General decade isn't actually too hard to figure out if you know the case - usually PARAKANYAA (talk) 08:13, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Please guide me how to upload my biography in Wikipedia

I have some issues with the uploading of biography file Vijaykutala (talk) 09:09, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@Vijaykutala: You might want to ask on Wikipedia. This is Wikimedia Commons, a site for storing media files. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:31, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Vijaykutala Not at all. While it is not forbidden to write your own biography on Wikipedia, it is strongly discouraged and can only be done successfully by people with a deep understanding of Wikipedia: If you need to ask this question, you don't have this deep understanding. Just wait, some one will write your biography (if you are notable by the notability criteria of wikipedia). But in the meantime you can edit wikipedia and learn how to edit wikipedia and gain the understanding needed to also write about people like yourself. And you can upload fotos here at commons. @20 upper: Please see COM:UK#Copyright tags.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:08, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@20 upper: For many or probably most ordinary cases, the tag is the general tag PD-old-70 or PD-old-auto (or, depending on the case, another tag of the PD-old type such as those listed in the page PD-old/doc). Tags such as PD-old-70, PD-old-auto, etc., are usable for many countries that have similar copyright rules, including the UK, so for such ordinary cases there is not a duplicate template for each country. (There may be some subtleties about the use of those tags on UK works in particular cases, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom#Ordinary copyright.) There are specific UK templates only for special cases, such as Crown copyright works or works by unknow authors, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom#Copyright tags. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:27, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Is this sufficient approval for a US Gov't image?

The Ellis Island Foundation (https:/www.www.statueofliberty.org) is part of the Nat'l Park Service. The US Gov't usually does not copyright their materials. The Foundation has a photograph of a Russian Volunteer Force (RVF) vessel that I would like to add to the RVF article. I was able to receive the following statement from the Foundation: "Hello again, The images of the passenger lists are not subject to copyright as they are documents produced by the US government for the purposes of immigration. Best, Donor Relations" Needless to say when dealing with the Federal Government it is virtually impossible to get the exact name of the person who inquiries should be referred to. Is the enough sufficient to allow the photo to be posted on Wikimedia? Thanks.Oldsilenus (talk) 14:59, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

@Oldsilenus: Is it about a photo of a boat or a photo of a list? If you asked them about a photo of a boat and they replied about a list of names, then no, their absence of reply about the photo is not sufficient approval. But that doesn't mean that the photo can't be in the public domain for some applicable reason, for example if there is evidence that it was taken by an employee of the federal government or that it was first published before 1929, etc. You're not telling much about it, so it's difficult to give a precise answer. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:26, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
The Nat'l Park Service Published the Photo as part of a passenger list. The exact date of the photo is not given., but the ship itself was scrapped long before 1929. The Park Service does not specify who actually took the photo. The Park Service was selling copies, but no longer does so. @Людмила Нестерук: I'm guessing this is about uk:Небор Андрій Ігорович (please link to what you are talking about) and possibly about deleted files File:Портрет на Алеї слави.jpg, File:Сім'я Неборів 01.jpg, File:Пам'ятник Андрію Небору.jpg, and File:Фото Андрія Небора.jpg. It looks like none of these indicated either a PD tag or a license, and any file on Commons needs one or the other to explain why it is either in the public domain or free-licensed. You were notified of the problem with each of these files on your user talk page and did not respond, nor in any way remedy the matter, so they were deleted. The files look like probable copyright violations, in any case: you can't just take someone else's photo, or a photo of someone else's photo, and publish it, so I doubt this can be remedied unless you actually can get a license from the person who took the pictures of Igorovich. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

I am losing my mind with these SVG templates. Someone please help.

Rant: As someone who has been editing here for 20 years and who makes SVG by hand, I am up the wall with templates like {{Valid SVG}}. Silly me, but I think that inserting {{Valid SVG}} on a file would mark it as having valid SVG. Instead, it says invalid SVG. ...what? And so I figured surely the documentation will tell me that I just have to insert something like {{Valid SVG|valid=yes}} or {{Valid SVG|1=on}} or something else intelligible or otherwise intuitive. Nope. Which parameter makes it say "valid"? If you thought that adding 1=o would make it turn to "valid", you would be like me and you would be wrong. If you thought the usage documentation would help, you would be wrong. If you were also like me and thought you could just find some transclusion of the template and reverse engineer it, then good luck. It seems like virtually all instances of this template are just transclusions from {{Igen}} which is by far the most arcane template I have ever seen. It seems like there's some kind of embargo on using letters, so you end up with weirdly truncated and unintelligible instances like {{Igen|I|+|%r|s=d}} or {{Igen|A|+|\+|s=l}} or {{Igen|T|+|°|s=oc}}. Most confusing of all: if you insert {{Igen}} you get a tag saying that the code is valid! And it just assumes that you used Inkscape for some reason?!?!

Take-away: Is there some rational reason why inserting {{Valid SVG}} doesn't just say "this is valid SVG", which is what anyone on the face of the Earth would naturally assume instead of saying the exact opposite and making someone use a completely different template to say what this template's name literally is??? —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:15, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Looking at the last edit of the template, the default display was changed when the template was deprecated in March 2023 and the old default display can be obtained by adding the parameter |c=y. But I guess the deprecation means that the template is not supposed to be used. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:54, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
c=y??? Why?! I go to the page and Ctrl+F and can't find "c=y" anywhere. Yeesh. It's just super-occult for seemingly no reason. :/ —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:58, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Maybe for "checked=yes"? If the template is deprecated, there was probably no point to make too obvious how to bypass the new default. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:12, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Как изменить фото?

Приветствую вас! Пожалуйста, научите менять фото. Например, у певца Falco. Ольга Ефа (talk) 08:50, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Within Commons (the site on which you are asking this), normally once a photo is uploaded, there is no reason to change it.
Or are you talking about changing the photo used in an article on some other site? That will vary depending on how the photo got into the article. Typically, it's just a matter of editing (substituting the name of one file for another in the wikitext), but (for example) if it's in an Infobox, it may be drawing from Wikidata. In theory, you can change the photo for an item on Wikidata, though usually this is not a good idea, because it can affect dozens of articles and pages, not just the one you mean to affect.
If you can ask a more specific question, and indicate the page and image you are talking about, someone can give you a more specific answer. - Jmabel ! talk 22:31, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Definition of "Fake SVG"

Hello. I saw the definition of fake SVG is something like "a SVG that does not contain any vector image and only contains one or more images", but that's confused me. I agree that a SVG is fake if it only contains a raster, but i think SVG's those containing more than one raster images must be considered as "SVG's with rasters" and not "Fake SVG's" because making a SVG with no vector image and more than one raster image can give the same quality with smaller file size. For example, if one part of the image can be compressed with a very low quality setting without decrasing visual quality but another part needs to be uncompressed but these images must be look side by side, making two images and then putting them on a SVG can give the same quality with a smaller filesize. I know i must go the to village pump if i want to propose something, but i'm currently only trying to understand the reason. RuzDD (talk) 12:19, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

I am not one of the most active SVG editors here, so I may be corrected by someone else, but from my perspective, a "fake SVG" is when someone just inserts a raster image into the SVG document and doesn't even bother vectorizing which elements could in principle be vectorized. There certainly are legitimate reasons to embed raster graphics in a vector image, but there are not good reasons to slap a PNG wholesale into an SVG file, add nothing, and call it a day. —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:26, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
@Justin I agree that, but i mean Template:Fake SVG says they will be fake SVG if the user combines more than one raster in a SVG; and while putting only one image to a SVG is unnecessary without a specific reason, putting more than one images to a SVG can create the same quality with smaller filesize and that's a good thing. RuzDD (talk) 13:15, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
For example, this image can be too smaller for the same quality if it's uploaded in SVG with two images. RuzDD (talk) 13:54, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
@RuzDD File:Gammarayburst-GRB990123.webp is 351 KB. Do you think you can create a smaller SVG? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:47, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Ratio of the right side is approximately 1:5. If i just downgrade the right part, it will be 210KB (it can be very much smaller for some files). Base64'ing multiplies the size with 1.33 so it will be 280KB. I agree this image is not a very good example but assume this image has 10 sub-images these are showing smaller and smaller parts (most of these images are made for size comparison). With this way, an image like this can be at 465KB instead of 1755KB. And, if i make the image "stepping", it can be 233KB instead of 1755KB. That's just for 1:2 ratio, so this efficiency can be huge for some files. Also, this way allows users to put different file formats together. For example, i can put different file formats or different qualities side by side to show the differences and this way i also can scale the images (for example File:Felis_silvestris_silvestris_small_gradual_decrease_of_quality.png, File:Visual_impact_of_a_jpeg_compression_on_Photoshop.jpg, and File:Comparison_of_JPEG_and_PNG.png). If i make this with only one big lossless image, filesize will be much higher. This can be another usage of this technique to give the same quality with too smaller filesize (and users can verify these formats are really these formats). @RuzDD: Again, as you've been told many times, extreme minimization of file sizes is not particularly a goal here. We'd much rather have "clean" files than tiny ones. - Jmabel ! talk 19:15, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Minimizing the filesize is not the only advantage but anyway, seems like there's no need to verify images like File:Visual_impact_of_a_jpeg_compression_on_Photoshop.jpg. RuzDD (talk) 20:54, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Updating Wikipedia page

Hi! I am a moderator at Musixmatch and wanted to update the logo on the Wikipedia page, but I did not create the logo. Am I still free to do so? Thanks! 2b-bear (talk) 13:34, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

If the logo is either uncopyrightable (because it's too simple) or free-licensed, then yes. Otherwise, no.
Assuming we are talking about File:Musixmatch-logo-panoramic-Brand.png, it is probably too simple to copyright in the U.S., but standards vary from country to country. You don't say what country the company is based in.
Also, just FYI, since you are apparently editing en-wiki on a topic with which you have a close connection, make sure you have read (and conformed with) en:WP:COI. If you've already done so, great, I just don't want you to accidentally get in trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Picture I submitted has gone

I submitted two pictures a few days ago, one, nude man with erect penis and one with flaccid penis, the flaccid picture has disappeared and I do not understand why. It was a classic pose, in fact it was a photograph of me posing for an art class. I’ve looked through your page of nudes with flaccid and mine would have been the only classic art pose, in fact I noticed that one picture of a man with a waist band cock string was included three times and at least one picture of an erect penis so I see no reason my offering could not have replaced one of these.

Glitch with paragraph break

Hello, I created a template at template:Monohedral quadrilateral tiling series description to use as a general description for multiple files. As you can see, it has two paragraphs, with a break between. However, when I actually deploy the template in an image description field, such as at File:Monohedral quadrilateral tiling 6, 2, 1(M), T4 (1).png, the paragraph break disappears. Anybody got any idea why? I did the apparently identical thing with another template, and the paragraph breaks show up fine, see e.g. File:Monohedral pentagonal tiling 4, 1, 1(M), T100 (1).png. Please do add appropriate categories or at the very least {{Uncategorized}} if you make future templates. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:41, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
As I understand it, categories are to help people find content, but there seems no reason for anyone to want to look at these templates separate from finding the files where they are used, which are themselves correctly categorised. But if the templates do need categorisation, what category should I use? These are file descriptions that are used across multiple files, created in order to avoid having to edit numerous descriptions individually in the event of any changes. Is there any category for that? Tai Ling (talk) 14:16, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Having issues with my recently uploaded image

can anyone check this up? I'm having trouble settings up the licence for the image File:Miss_Universe_Philippines_Logo.svg ItsAxld (talk) 08:36, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

ItsAxld: You can't determine what licence applies to this image unless it is very clearly stated on the site you found it and even then, this is obviously the logo of the organisation. The organisation, or their designer, own the copyright and we would need their written permission releasing the image under a free licence we accept in order to keep the image. As a piece of advise, generally most images you find on the internet are not freely licenced so caution is required before trying to upload such images because you uploading and volunteer editors patrolling such image and then deleting them or nominating them for deletion just causes more work and frustration all around. We are happy to help so if you think an image might be useful, it's a good idea to ask here or on the copyright talk pages before uploading. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 12:27, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

How come the photos I uploaded seem to have violate copyright? It is indeed part of an official document issued by Polish Institue?

Hi guys, I am quite confused and need some tutorial now. So, I uploaded two photos from Polish Institue this post https://instytutpolski.pl/beijing/pl/2019/11/15/li-yundi-laureatem-zlotego-medalu-zasluzony-kulturze-gloria-artis/. Since it is an official document issued by Polish government, I have them licensed under Polish "official documents, materials, signs and symbols", while now they are speedy deleted, under the reason apparently not "official documents, materials, signs and symbols. May someone lecture me on this matter, thanks EleniXDD (talk) 11:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Your source states: fot. ARP W PEKINIE / IP. Does that relate to the photos on the page? You seem to be referring to Template:PD-Polishsymbol, I have no idea if that applies here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:52, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
that's Polish Institute in Beijing:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Institute, https://www.gov.pl/web/diplomacy/polish-institutes. According to that copyright law, official documents, materials, logos and symbols is considered public domain. And this one is obviously official document by Polish gvt, if not official material.
I still hv no idea why it is deleted, and the one nominated for the deletion cannot explain well to me. EleniXDD (talk) 13:05, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Request for Account Deletion - Mohsen Khajeh 1995

Hello Wikimedia Support, I am writing to request the deletion of my Wikimedia account with the username "Mohsen Khajeh 1995." Could you please help me in deleting this account? Additionally, here is the link to the images associated with my account:https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=mohsen+khajeh&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image Mohsen Khajeh 1995 (talk) 22:35, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

You have the option to have your account renamed. You can also request to have your account blocked, so that it can no longer be used for edits. You can also change your password to something random, so that you cannot log in anymore. You can also make a notice on your user page that the account is retired. But the account cannot be deleted. You have uploaded three files and if your account was deleted it would no longer be possible to attribute your uploads. @Mohsen Khajeh 1995: it looks like all of your uploads are unused personal photos, so those can be deleted if you like, but basically we don't delete accounts on Commons (nor, as far as I know, does any WMF project). - Jmabel ! talk 07:24, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
All accounts are SUL-acounts, therefore the deletion on one project would make no sense (and even if it was done: the account would auto-recreate once the user visits the project in question while logged in to the SUL account). Erroneous image attribution across a large range of species articles

File:The birds of America (Pl. 215) Agelaius assimilis (cropped).jpg is an extract from Birds of America by John James Audubon. Audubon depicts a bird that is most probably what is now called Agelaius phoeniceus gubernator, Audubon calling it Agelaius gubernator. Because of a similarity in appearance to the very localized red-shouldered blackbird Agelaius assimilis of Cuba, and Audubon's muddled description, the image has been tagged as a depiction of the Cuban bird. It isn't, the females are entirely black. In expanding the enwiki article [3] I figured this out and removed it, but the image is in wide use across many languages, and I hesitate to do more than correct the description on Commons and categorization. See [4] and subsequent pages for the referenced text and description. I think the image has been misapplied on a large scale, in good faith. Any suggestions on what to do with its naming and usage? There is an alternate image, which is at least correct as far as I can tell,File:Agelaius assimilis 104127030.jpg. I've removed the Audubon image from the Wikidata entry, which has reduced the erroneous inclusions a good bit. Acroterion (talk) 01:43, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

@Acroterion: I suppose you can rename the file with the precise current name if you think that's the best solution. But given that it is an "historical" book image that did not use that name, my suggestion would be to simply rename with the book title and plate number, in the same manner as the files in Category:The Birds of America (1841). "File:The birds of America (Pl. 215) (cropped).jpg". Only a few uses remain now. Erroneous uses can be removed. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:22, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea.I'll see if I can flag the remaining issues on the individual uses. Acroterion (talk) 00:37, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Uploading an Image of an Internet Personality

I'm adding some details to a wikipedia page for Little Z, currently referencing and trying to pass for recognisability, stuff like that. But I was wondering how I could find a photo of him without it being a restricted image, because reasons of copyright, etc. If you have a good image of him that can be put on wikipedia, or know how I can get an image of Little Z, please let me know! Thank you. Mayor Orangutan (talk) 03:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

This is about en:Draft:Little Z. Note: that contribution has so far been declined for lack of sufficient demonstration of notability (third-party sources writing substantively about the subject). Even what is indicated there as his YoutTube channel gives a 404.
Probably you won't get anyone interested in actively helping you track down an image until you can demonstrate notability.
Probably the easiest thing to do (if indeed his YouTube channel is accessible somewhere) is to ask him to license a still of himself from one of his videos. He can either place it on a public-facing page of his own social media with a clear statement of the license, or can go through the VRT process to grant permission via email. - Jmabel ! talk 07:27, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I'm sorry about the error with the channel link, this link should hopefully work: https://www.youtube.com/@LittleZReal
I am currently trying to get some notability and references through, I hopefully can gt the page published! But first, I'll need an image so it is sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. Mayor Orangutan (talk) 10:31, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
You can find more about Licenses here. For commons a photograph must be lincesed under CC-by, CC-by-SA or CC0, so it can be processed through VRT. --iMahesh (talk) 10:43, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
An image will do nothing to add to validation of notability. - Jmabel ! talk 00:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

I wish for my work not to be sold unchanged

If I wish for my work not to be sold unchanged for real money, should i upload it here or should i instead upload it to the wikimedia project i want to use it on?

This is a pretty serious question as i did see the licensing tutorial and it says that by sharing my work here, one permission i grant by doing so is for people to sell my work without my notice. While i am fine with modified versions of my work be sold, i am not fine with the original file being sold. I am confused of if i should upload it here or the Wikipedia instead because of that? what should i do? AuroraANovaUma (talk) 02:52, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Hmmmmmm, i dont get it, because i still am allowing most commercial use, I'm just not allowing people to sell the original file for real money AuroraANovaUma (talk) 15:06, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
@AuroraANovaUma: Hi, The basic mission of the Wikimedia websites, including Wikipedia and others, is to offer works that can be reused for any purpose, provided that they are properly attributed to their authors. If you want to place restrictions on what can be done with your work, that is of course your very legitimate choice, but then it means that your work is not for the Wikimedia websites, because it is not in the scope of why the Wikimedia websites exist. If you want to offer your work on the internet with restrictions, there are many websites where it can be done, but that is not the mission of Wikimedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:42, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
@AuroraANovaUma: You have licensed your uploads with {{self|Copyrighted free use|CC0|WTFPL}}. The first of those, when rendered, includes "If this is your own work, please use {{Cc-zero}} instead", so you should not be using both that and the second. Both the second and the third say "You can [...] distribute [...] the work, even for commercial purposes, [...] without asking permission" and "do what the fuck you want to", respectively, so your manually applied text "you cannot directly sell the original file for real money" is both nonsensical and unenforceable.
If you do not agree to allowing your work to be used commercially, without modification, then you should not upload it here or on Wikipedia, where the same criteria will apply. But do you really think people will pay money for works like File:Graffiti-de-símbolo-de-direitos-autorais.svg? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:11, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Are modern black and white photos acceptable?

Are black and white photos of current subjects taken with modern digital cameras acceptable for uploading to Wikimedia Commons? Or are color photos always the preferred choice? David Ratledge (talk) 16:29, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

@David Ratledge: Yes, b&w images are acceptable (subject to the usual caveats about copyright and scope); but if you can, please upload colour, or both. Users can always convert colour images to b&w; the reverse is less easy. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:53, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Speaking as someone who does a fair amount of concert photography: there are many circumstances in which it is far easier to produce a good black-and-white photo than a good color photo, either because the lighting is rather bizarre in terms of colors or simply because it is very low light. From my own work, File:Sarah Dougher 02A.jpg (black and white) is a lot more useful file than File:Sarah Dougher 02.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you (to both of you that replied). This is helpful information. I have recently been shooting more and more black and white out of personal interest but still wanted to contribute it if appropriate to Wikimedia Commons. It sounds like it would be okay to do so but that ultimately it would be best to contribute color photos. I will refrain therefore from uploading most of my black and whites to Wikimedia Commons so as not to overdo it. I have been searching, and while it is not hard to find black and white photos on Wikimedia Commons, modern ones that could have been shot in color seem to be relatively low in numbers.

- Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Ladies and gentlemen!

I've recently upload the above mentioned file. I got two questions concerning this file:

- Is there anyone at Wikimedia that knows about russian copyright law? I created this file in consideration of all the legal information i could find on Commons, but i'm only 99% sure this file is actually not an object of copyright even though denomination and country name are preserved.

- This file is an adaption of File:Sulambek Oskanov (marka).jpg. I'm not sure i uploaded my file as intended. If i made any mistakes concerning the upload, please let me know.

Thanks a lot, greetings from Vienna - Noah.Albert.ZivMilFü (talk) 09:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@Noah.Albert.ZivMilFü: I made some adjustments; I think it should be good now. - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Gade-English Dictionary

how can I create a page or pages for Gade-English Dictionary same as www.hausadictionary.com Brobadiah (talk) 11:15, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

@Brobadiah: are you referring to Category:Lingua Libre pronunciation by HausaDictionary or something else? If that is what you are referring to, the category page would be basically identical except for the name. - Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your rapid response.
I actually saw what I was searching for on the Developer Portal, which I downloaded PHP zip folder 📁 for the project.
Are there tutorials on database once the file is extracted? 102.91.5.127 15:47, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Brobadiah i guess https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki has what might be helpful. RZuo (talk) 11:19, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

Wondering whether or not the license is okay

Hey there! I was just wondering if it would be alright if I were to upload this image of the current Bosnian foreign minister. I've seen some images from the European Council's page uploaded to Commons, but I'm not so confident that their licenses are okay, unlike the images from the EU Commission's page which are perfectly fine to freely redistribute. Thank you to anyone for taking their time for this in advance! :) -- Bakir123 (talk) 19:58, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

@Bakir123: Hi, You can see #European Council, a few sections above on this page. It's probably better to wait until the related deletion discussion is decided. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Bakir123: All such files were recently deleted as not being sufficiently free for us to keep. Ww2censor (talk) 11:37, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

Photo of a portrait as illustration in a Wikipedia biography

I want to add a black&white photo of a portrait commissioned and paid for by the Swedish art collector dr Sten Lindeberg (1894-1954) in Paris 1949, painted by the french artist Bernard Buffet (1928-1998). The photo is ment to illustrate Sten Lindebergs Wikipedia .biography.

Please inform me about the best way to do this.

Best regards! Plin38 (talk) 15:30, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@Plin38 I assume the portrait is of Sten Lindeberg (läkare). While you can't upload it on Commons, it's possible you can upload it locally on Swedish Wikipedia. I don't know their rules on this, you have to ask there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:48, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång and Plin38: Different from the strictly enforced en:WP:F on English Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia has no mention on m:nfc, so non-free content is not welcome at all on that project.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:57, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the prompt answer! So OK, if I get permission from the copyrightholder(s), how do I proceed from there? Plin38 (talk) 16:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the prompt answer! So OK, if I get permission from the copyrightholder(s), how do I proceed from there? Plin38 (talk) 16:12, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
@Plin38 Simplest for you is that the copyright holder register an account and use [5]. Otherwise, you/they have to follow the directions at COM:VRT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:43, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
That sounds like the portrait would still be copyrighted (until 2068, 70 years after Buffet's death), with the copyright owned by Buffet's heirs. To place that here on Commons, you'd need to have them grant a license. - 19:31, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Is this photo of a recent model a breach of copyright?

Vasas hull profile

Is this a breach of copyright? It is a photo of a modern model. So I am wondering if this breaches the copyright of the maker of the model. I am hoping that it does not, as images like this are in short supply. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 17:51, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

The above was originally raised as a question on [6] and referred here. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 19:19, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Could be problematic if the model is considered to have enough originality to be copyrightable. You might be able to get permission from the holder of the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
The model is on—presumably permanent—display in a museum in Sweden. Refer to Com:Sweden. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:36, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
As far as I am aware, this model is inside the museum as part of the permanent display. The existence of donated images, per [7] makes me wonder if a photo of a modern model has a copyright problem. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 21:25, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Originality of model: since this model is the result of a massive archaeological investigation, a great deal of interpretation and measuring, I doubt that those who produced it would see it as anything other than original work. The same people have published pictures in books and academic papers that convey the same information as the model and those pictures are certainly copyrighted. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 22:57, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
The photo is mine and I'm the primary author of the article about Vasa. I used to work at the museum and I know that they are very much aware of how these photos are used. Not going to comment on the specific legal issues involved, but it's worth noting that the museum has never raised any concerns or objections to any of this. It's not an argument per se to keep an image, but it might be more constructive to simply ask them about it.
From a more general perspective, Commons needs to get it's act together regarding the copyright status of models on display in public museums and the likes. There has to be clear and reasonably simple guidelines for these cases and they need to be applied consistently. It's not reasonable to try to figure this out for each individual photo of each individual scale model of... whatever.
Peter Isotalo 09:29, 17 February 2024 (UTC)::"
@Peter Isotalo:
  1. quoting from Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle, '…arguments that amount to "we can get away with it", such as the following, are against Commons' aims" and, as an example, 'The copyright owner will not mind/should be pleased that we have disseminated their work.'
  2. There is no general answer to the copyright question, because it varies greatly from country to country; also, oddly, the more accurate a model, the less likely it is to be copyrightable, because it is simply a skillful reproduction rather than a creative work. The rules can't be made simple, any more than for any other sort of work. Copyright is inherently complicated.
  3. If you used to work at the museum, you are probably in a better position than anyone else here to obtain permission. - Jmabel ! talk 18:46, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I worked there part time over 10 years ago for extra cash as a student, not because I'm a museum person. I don't have any special contacts. They're run government agency and are available for anyone to contact, including in English.
And I'm not the one bringing up this up as a copyright issue. Just trying to provide some context. Peter Isotalo 22:55, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Do we know who negotiated the donation of images by the museum (for example File:Block - Vasamuseet - 03741.jpg)? Surely that is the best route into gaining permission for an additional image. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 08:50, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
It's from DigitaltMuseum. Peter Isotalo 21:08, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
But the set of free-to-use images on the Digital Museum is a larger number than those identified here as a "donation". That is what makes me think that someone specifically arranged use of a smaller group of photos. Or perhaps a broad-brush term was used in the identifier here. Someone within Commons should know. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 22:28, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
The block photo wasn't "donated" but taken directly from DigitaltMuseum as far as I can tell.
DigitaltMuseum is a collaboration directly with various museums, including the Vasa Museum who have provided the metadata and chosen licenses themselves.
I'm figuring that they've thought through their position on the copyright of the models they've commissioned through their uploads to DigitaltMuseum. Here's one of the model in question. [8] Peter Isotalo 07:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

I have opened a new thread here to ask for the procedures needed to request release of the model's copyright to the extent needed to continue to use the photo here. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 15:31, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel, even if we disregard how different countries treat the issue, do we have any guidance regarding scale models where the creator hasn't been dead over 70 years? We're supposed to deal with this by a purely individual basis? Peter Isotalo 19:20, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
@Peter Isotalo: "70 years" is relevant in many countries, but not all (e.g. for the U.S., it has only relatively recently been relevant for anything, and I'd be hard pressed to come up with an example of where it would matter for a museum model). I don't think we can "disregard how different countries treat the issue," because "the issue" is (1) whether the model has a copyright and, if it does have a copyright, (2) whether there is sufficient freedom of panorama in the country in question to make that irrelevant. Both of those are country-by-country questions, including differing thresholds of originality. - Jmabel ! talk
"Whether the model has a copyright" is impossible to actually figure out because Commons doesn't seem to address this issue anywhere.
I've started a thread over at the Village pump regarding this. Feel free to join.
Peter Isotalo 21:17, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Billbarretta19, who states [9] he is Bill Barretta, has recently uploaded [10] several pictures as "own work". Some of these may be that in our/Commons sense like [11], but for most it is not obvious. Bill Barretta works with Muppets (he is among much else the current Swedish Chef), and he just got an Emmy for it.

What is the best way to proceed here, I've never done any mass-tagging. I'll be quite happy if we can keep them all. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång and Billbarretta19: I believe that the Commons:Volunteer Response Team can go through verifying an account as being a particular person. I would say that would be the best way to proceed.
COM:VFC is certainly the best tool for mass tagging. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Beste,

Graag zou ik de afbeelding willen gebruiken van Ann Petersen op de Engelse Wikipedia om deze te plaatsen op de Nederlandstalige Wikipedia.

Hopelijk vormt dit geen probleem.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the Dutch-language Wikipedia does not allow non-free images. You'd have to ask there to get a definitive answer though, not on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:55, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
